Sound like a joke? Think again — this sentence was standard practice in 2024. The fact that kratom was sold as a “collector’s item” spread across the Czech Republic like wildfire, and its popularity led nearly everyone to stock it. You could buy it not only in online shops or vending machines, but also at barbershops and convenience stores. With this premise in mind, students at the Silesian University — in co-production with Tomas Bata University — began filming their bachelor’s project about kratom, the leaf of the tropical tree Mitragyna speciosa. The result is the observational documentary Kratom Collectors, which captures one of the strangest stories of recent years: how an underground substance became a nationwide phenomenon.
