Jan Antonín Pitínský: Household Goods
In this collection of more than twenty short prose texts, the author's dramatic and theatrical talent becomes apparent in his portrayal of everyday situations and miniature stories from so-called ordinary life. These are conveyed through a highly stylized, somewhat archaic, playful, and richly metaphorical language. The characters in Pitínský’s stories evoke the figures and sketches of Jan Neruda or Bohumil Hrabal—people capable of illuminating melancholy moods or tragic moments with a touch of humor or joy.
Remarkable, too, is the connection of the texts with the spa town of Luhačovice and its surrounding region, which are inseparably tied to the author's life.
The book won the Czech Litera Prize for Prose in 2025. The reading will include excerpts not only from the award-winning book but also from newer, unpublished manuscripts by J.A. Pitínský.
Lecture Will be in Czech Language.
